A Promise Kept: Peace in the Wandering
On Christmas Eve, we lit the candle of peace as a family. We wanted to share how peace has been a part of our journey this last year. It has been a year of discernment and prayer as we explored vocational ministry. Specifically, becoming missionaries to an unreached people group. Our hearts have been pierced to bring the Good news of Jesus to them through the means of a business. While the task looks mountainous and full of valleys, we are comforted when we look to our God's promises found in scripture.
Let’s be real for a minute. Many days we have felt like our world has been turned upside down. We felt the pain and sadness from our friends and families' hearts when we informed them that we were called to go. We felt the anxiousness of clients, students, and colleagues as we waded through the unknowns of transition. We pondered God's timing when the world would say it’s not a good time to move overseas, especially with 3 young children and an infant. We wrestled with ourselves, wondering if we are even qualified for this mountainous task in front of us. God has called us to leave family, our church family, close friends, and 2 great careers; in order to move to a place where we have no family, friends, or familiarity for that matter.
Some of you may be thinking, that doesn't sound very peaceful. But first we need to understand what God’s peace is. Jesus reveals to us that His peace is different. Jesus tells us this in John 14:27: - “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” - God’s peace is not what the world would define as “peace”. The world's peace is defined by having favorable circumstances: “a feeling that all is right in the world and if things are going well, we feel peaceful; and if things go awry, the peace dissipates quickly.”
However, His peace came to earth the moment he was born and laid in a lowly manger and continued through His crucifixion. The peace we receive comes from the empty tomb, the prophecies fulfilled, and the promises kept. Because of His resurrection, those of us that believe and put our hope and trust in Him will be forgiven our sins and we will be with Him for an eternity in a world made new.
Even though everything around our individual worlds feel chaotic at times, our peace comes from the faithfulness and mercy of the Savior. Because of Him, we can trust our lives, relationships, family, and finances to Him. God’s peace holds and secures us through the uncomfortable moments.
As our family looks forward to our journey of reaching the unreached, we are assured that God will provide His peace in any trial because He is right there with us. Rest assured that whatever trial you are facing today, He is with you and will wash you with His peace that surpasses all understanding. Brothers and sisters, be filled with his everlasting peace, knowing His promises are always kept. May we give God the glory for the gift of the Savior that came to be our intercession, our justice, our redemption, our Immanuel, and our peace!
